Slap bang in the middle of O’Connell Street, if buildings could talk the GPO would have a lot to say. As the main stronghold of the Irish Volunteers during the 1916 Easter Rising, the building was destroyed by fire in the course of the rebellion and not repaired until the Irish Free State government took up the task many years later. Now home to the headquarters of An Post - the Irish postal service, the GPO is one of Ireland's most famous buildings and was the last of the great Georgian public buildings erected in Dublin.
