Located in County Antrim, The Giant’s Causeway is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Northern Ireland. The causeway contains over 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, many of them hexagonal in shape. These columns are the result of an ancient volcanic fissure eruption. The tallest columns are about 12 metres (39 ft) high, and the solidified lava in the cliffs is 28 metres (92 ft) thick in places. The Giant’s Causeway was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986.According to legend, Irish giant Fionn Mac Cumhaill and Scottish giant Benandonner resented one another. After trading insults Benandonner challenged Fionn to a fight. So Fionn decided to build a path to use as stepping stones so the two giants could meet in the middle of the North Channel. There are several versions of what happened next and both are worth reading about. The columns that remained after their duel became known as the Giant’s Causeway. This print is part of our “Irish Landmark” art print series, a bold and contemporary collection of open edition prints inspired by Ireland’s heritage, culture, and architecture.
